Visit to Derek Shaw’s Yard – Classy Lass, Sun 1st April
We visited Derek Shaw’s this morning to see Classy Lass for the final time. We were met by his wife Lyndsey who was going out, so after 15 minutes or so, she left us in Derek’s care.
We went to the filly’s barn to see Classy Lass but she was very sleepy and flaked out on the floor. So we had a drink and natter with Mr Shaw to give her time to wake up.
Once Classy was up she was as good as ever, lapping up the attention and standing still for photos.
Derek then took her outside for us. She is such a good looking horse and Lyndsey may have a new owner already lined up for her.
Whilst we were there Derek said we were free to have a wander around and see the other horses, so we did, as well as look at his facilities.
Including the new Walker, new Lunging pen, All Weather Menage and he’s also currently having a further gallop installed, as you can see from the photos.
Shawkantango was on the walker as he’s got a race at Wolverhampton on Wednesday, and so have Mataajir, Saktoon and Climaxfortackle.
It’s a very impressive set up and set in very scenic countryside, and was topped off by glorious weather today.
Many thanks to the Shaw’s for letting us visit.

Classy Lass final race – Kempton Wed 28 March
Wednesday evening was Classy Lass‘ last time as a racehorse. Which came as a massive shock to me, even though we knew it might be beforehand.
From where we were stood and also viewing via the big screen, we thought she had her best race yet travelling well until 2 furlongs out where she then had to be asked to pick up the pace.
Although she did miss the break from the stalls, but immediately caught up and passed two other horses.
She had 6 races, the first of which was a night meeting at Wolverhampton in November. To a lot of people she would have been classed as a no hoper, but I never saw her that way. She always tried and I’m proud that she never finished last in all 6 races.
Only two people saw all of her races in person, my dad and me. Whether it was a freezing and wet night at Dunstall Park, a cold afternoon at Southwell or a 150 mile trip to Kempton Park for an evening meeting, we booked time off work to go see and support her.
I always went to watch her hoping she would place, and even though she never did that didn’t bother me one bit. It was never about the money either, I just wanted to see her do well.
Some of the prices she went off at to me were disgusting. 500/1 on her third run at Wolverhampton? When was the last time you saw a horse that price there!?
We always had a little each way hoping that she would prove them wrong.
She’s a lovely horse, not a bit of bother and a pleasure to have been associated with.
I hope once she’s found a new home that they will take very good care of her and that she’s happy in her new role.
A big genuine thank you to Derek & Lindsey Shaw and all their staff for their time, effort and dedication they put in her.
Also a thanks needs to go to Richard and Ownaracehorse for being a good syndicate to be with.
They made us feel like we were really involved with her. Not forgetting Peter, who we had a couple of good evenings at Wolverhampton with.

My Racehorse Shares: Classy Lass, Back To Paris and Fazza
Just thought I’d do a Blog page for my racehorses all on one page. I am only a very minor shareholder in them all, but I am still proud to be associated with them.
Classy Lass (trained by Derek Shaw) is through OwnARacehorse,
Back To Paris (trained by Philip Kirby) also through OwnARacehorse,
Fazza (trained by Edwin Tuer) my newest addition, via winning a share through a competition run by OnToAWinner

Horse Classy Lass has not had any winners on the all weather. Thus a summary report of the performance can not be generated.

| 1 | 9 | 11.1% | 44.4% | n/a | £6.00 | 67% |
• Back To Paris(IRE) is a very profitable horse on the turf. Backing all his runners to a £1 stake in the past 10 years has returned a profit of £6 (67%).
• The strike rate of 11.1% is just better than average. There is little information to go on for the past 12 months. He has only had 3 runs during that time.
• The horse last won a race on the flat turf 243 days ago. The longest losing streak was 7 in April 2010
• His most recent biggest win was in July 2011 where he won at 14-1.
• He is much better on left handed courses and much better in middle distance races. He has a strong preference for firmish ground.
• 100% of Back To Paris(IRE)’s winners have come from one jockey: Miss M Mullineaux.
Stats: Turf only. Jumps placings: 80/0F/P4F-73PU4125
Fazza
| Description: | 5yo Chestnut Gelding |

• Fazza is a very profitable horse on the turf. Backing all his runners to a £1 stake in the past 10 years has returned a profit of £10 (59%). Not surprisingly his A/E value stat is a respectable 1.59 which indicates that punters very much underbet him.
• The strike rate of 17.6% is much better than average. There has been an improvement in the past 12 months. The strike rate for the past year is 25.0%.
• The horse last won a race on the flat turf 262 days ago. The longest losing streak was 7 in September 2009
• His most recent biggest win was in May 2011 where he won at 14-1.

Photographs from Thursday’s all-weather horseracing at Southwell, 29th December.
First 8 photos are of 2-year-old filly Classy Lass, the other photographs,
including Hayley Turner and most race winners are below those.
We were all happy with Classy’s first attempt racing on fibresand and at a mile. Given a few more races we reckon she will definately keep on improving.

Classy Lass:
Classy Lass Third Race + Loyalty (Derek Shaw Racing)
Two-year-old filly, Classy Lass had her third race yesterday at Wolverhampton, in a 7f Maiden.
We were expecting her to build on her two previous visits to the track and show her true ability. All was going well, and she was just off the pack, until the final bend where she hung right and seemed to lose her action.
As a precaution jockey Mark Coumbe eased up on her just before the final furlong marker, incase something really was a miss. As you could see on the AtTheRaces pictures he was concerned and continually looking down towards her near fore leg.
After the race she seemed distressed and wasn’t walking her usual smooth self. Hopefully she is fine, as the vet checked her out on course and Derek Shaw said he would see how she was over the weekend.
Next time out will be in handicap company, and she should be awarded her mark on Tuesday. If she gets the all clear from Friday’s race, she could be back out before New Year.
I really like going to Wolverhampton Racecourse, it’s a shame they never get a crowd they deserve, and the weather has always been about -5 (slight exaggeration) the times we’ve been, which won’t help their cause to get numbers through the door.
Betting:
As for the on course bookmakers last night, of which there were only 8 of them… For the first race, where the favourite (Baccarat) was 1/3, only four were offering each way betting (one even at a 1/6th of the odds!). All were poor prices compared to the industry SP’s. Yet the ones who were only offering win only, were doubling and trebling the SP, but what was the point, when the chances of anything other than the odds-on fav winning were very slim.
To me they didn’t want to take bets on that race?
On another note related to betting prices, the best option has to be online as you get Best Price Guarantee. One horse last night drifted to three times the price it opened, yet if you had bet in your high street betting shop you wouldn’t have got that increase, just the same as you wouldn’t had you bet on course.
But then on the other hand I’m continually reading on Twitter where online bookies are limiting people to no more than £25 per bet, yet on course I’ve seen people bet over £200. Even at a Point to Point meeting earlier this year they were taking £100 bets!
Surely something needs to be done about this. Racing can’t live without betting/bookies, and bookies can’t live without customers, yet it’s the customers who fund both the bookmakers and courses, and they are getting a poor deal.
I can’t see anything changing though.

LOYALTY
A very impressive performance by the 4-year-old today, under a superbly timed ride from Joe Fanning.
Both he and trainer Mr Shaw both only went to Lingfield for the one race, and it paid off as Loyalty came from last position at the start of the home straight, to carve his way through the 9 other runners to win by a neck.
It was a thrilling finish the way he showed an amazing turn of foot to fly past everything in front of him.
Making that 4 wins from his last 7 races, and only out of the top 3 once.
A quality horse, well done to all associated with him.
Fri 16th Dec – Wolverhampton & Ascot
WOLVERHAMPTON
We’re off to Wolverhampton again on Friday, for Classy Lass‘ third race. Hopefully she can build on her two previous runs at the course, now back to 7 furlongs from 5 last time.
It doesn’t look as tough a race as last time to me. The probable winner will be Baccarat, which I gave on Twitter yesterday (Wed). He was 3rd in Classy Lass’ last race, and looked a winner in the making next time out, and judging by the card on Sporting Life he will be favourite.
She was 10th of 11 first time out, and 10th of 12 three weeks ago. Yet again the bookies will probably have her the outsider at a stupid price. One of the on course bookies had her at an utterly ridiculous price last time we were at Wolverhampton. Let’s hope one day they will go home regretting that. Mark Coumbe takes the ride again.
ASCOT
Away from Dunstall Park, my main betting interest is Hazy Tom in the 1.55pm, 2m 0f Class 1 Mitie Kennel Gate Novices Hurdle (Grade 2).
Tote, BetFred and Boyle Sports opened up the best priced at 13/8, but that was gone within an hour. I had some of that, and a top up at 11/8.
He’s currently best price of 5/4 with most firms. The main danger should be Molotof.
I’ve been on him the last 3 times, first of which was his bumper win at Worcester. Hopefully he can repay all the support and do the business again and keep up his unbeaten record.
Thanks for looking.
Classy Lass 2nd Race – 25th Nov Wolverhampton
Classy Lass had her second race last night, at Wolverhampton again, dropped to 5f from 7f.
It was more to try her at that distance and for her to continue her learning experience. As her breeding suggests 7 or 8 furlongs to be her best trip, and afterwards jockey Mark Coumbe reiterated that, saying sprinting isn’t her game, and she would be better at 7f or a mile.
I was still happy with the result though, as she wasn’t last and beat 2 home this time. As with most horses, their first few runs are just to get them used to racing, and then build on that. Hopefully Classy Lass will show her best when she goes handicapping.
Plus if you looked at the horses in her race, it was always going to be between the first 3 in the betting, as to who was going to lose their maiden tag. The Evens favourite Decision By One won.
She was looking good yet again, as all of Derek’s horses were last night. We met Mr Shaw and OwnaRacehorse‘s Peter again, who is always good company. I can definitely recommend getting involved with them.
Thanks to some input from a photography forum, I was able to get some pics last night, with the camera settings they suggested. Some are a bit dark due to not much light.

Classy Lass first race
Classy Lass had her first race last night, at Wolverhampton. For her first time I thought she did alright for herself. Eight of the field had already had race experience, so she was only 1 of 3 who were newcomers.
I don’t think anyone expected her to win first time out, but she travelled well after missing the break a little from the stalls, and got tired towards the end, but at least she didn’t finish last which to me was the main thing.
Hopefully she will come on for the run and improve over her next races.
Classy Lass Racing Post Profile
Last night was my first time at Dunstall Park. It was much better than I was expecting. Very friendly staff, good facilities and all nice and compact. A shame there could of been no more than 100 people there, with about the same number watching from inside.
I was disappointed with the photo opportunities. I took my proper camera, but night time, plus rain, moving horses and floodlights aren’t ideal. Everything was coming out blurred, so the pics are off my phone.
Classy Lass set to race this weekend
UPDATE: Classy Lass has been declared to run on Fri 11th Nov, 6.15pm click for Racecard

It’s been a long wait, but Klassy Lassy (as she was supposed to be named) is entered in two races this weekend. Both 7f Maidens at Wolverhampton. We don’t know if she will definitely run though, as the first race has attracted 41 entries, for only 12 available spaces.
As I’m only a very minor shareholder in a syndicate, all information I receive is ‘second hand’, but the story goes in September the name Klassy Lassy was approved by the BHA only for them to have a change of heart and oppose this. Two applications later with different variations of this, and they finally agreed to: Classy Lass. Still a good name, but to me doesn’t have the same ring or strength as the original.
We went to see the filly at the start of October at a yard visit at Derek Shaw’s. It was a general open day organised by Ownaracehorse (who I can certainly recommend), but we were fortunate enough that she was chosen along with Councellor, out of all the horses there, to do some work on the gallops. She worked very well and you could tell she was enjoying it and making a good effort.
We had some one to one time with her after when she was back in her box, and she’s definitely got some character (and a love of biting coats haha).
Derek has a very good set up and facilities, all on site, in a lovely countryside location, and he was very warm and friendly.
We were able to see all the horses he has, which must be minimum 30 at a rough guess. Some names you might recognise being: Shawkantango, Shaw’s Diamond, Prickles, Baby Strange, Sarah’s Art…
It was an all round thoroughly enjoyable visit.
She’s expected to need her first couple of runs, and maybe a longer trip, but the joys of racing is, you never know what’s going to happen. Hopefully she will learn fast, and as much as it is a long shot, hopefully she can gain a win this All-Weather season. If not I’m still very proud to be associated with her.
Classy Lass should race fairly regularly at Wolverhampton, Lingfield and Kempton.
I will add more pics to this blog, after her first race, should anyone want to take notice of her progress. Thanks for looking.
CLASSY LASS, 2YO bay filly (May 2009)
Trade Fair – Kythia (Kahyasi)
Kythia was a horse bred for stamina being by Kahyasi and out of a Rainbows For Life mare. It is perhaps slightly surprising that she was speedy enough to win as a two-year-old landing a seven furlong Beverley maiden on her second start. She did not add to that victory but ran into places at 10f and 12f as a three year old. She has already produced Phoenix Enforcer (by Bahamian Bounty) a dual three year old winner over 8f and 10f – both with cut in the ground.
Trade Fair was a seven furlong specialist who liked the ground on the faster side and was a rock solid Group 3 performer, winning twice at that level. He has a reputation as a solid stallion getting a good percentage of winners at up to a mile. His progeny can and do get further if there is stamina introduced from the dam side as appears to be the case here.
