Classy Lass 2nd Race – 25th Nov Wolverhampton

November 26, 2011 Leave a comment

Classy Lass in parade ring

Classy Lass had her second race last night, at Wolverhampton again, dropped to 5f from 7f.

It was more to try her at that distance and for her to continue her learning experience.  As her breeding suggests 7 or 8 furlongs to be her best trip, and afterwards jockey Mark Coumbe reiterated that, saying sprinting isn’t her game, and she would be better at 7f or a mile.

I was still happy with the result though, as she wasn’t last and beat 2 home this time.  As with most horses, their first few runs are just to get them used to racing, and then build on that.  Hopefully Classy Lass will show her best when she goes handicapping.

Coming back, after the race

Plus if you looked at the horses in her race,  it was always going to be between the first 3 in the betting, as to who was going to lose their maiden tag.  The Evens favourite Decision By One won.

She was looking good yet again, as all of Derek’s horses were last night.  We met Mr Shaw and OwnaRacehorse‘s Peter again, who is always good company.  I can definitely recommend getting involved with them.

Going to the stalls for the start

Thanks to some input from a photography forum, I was able to get some pics last night, with the camera settings they suggested.  Some are a bit dark due to not much light.

QIPCO British Champions Day

BROWN PANTHER

ASCOT – Saturday 15th October 2011

This is the ground-breaking event that the QIPCO British Champions Series leads up to, when the eyes of the racing world will be focused on Ascot for the richest day in British racing history. £3 million in prize money will be on offer across the final races in each of the five QIPCO British Champions Series categories. It represents a fantastic opportunity for the equine stars of the 2011 Flat racing season to compete on one of the world’s greatest stages on one momentous day. Important changes have been made to the autumn race programme in Britain in order to create QIPCO British Champions Day as the major championship climax to the Flat racing season that this country has previously lacked. Now the scene is set for a thrilling raceday on Ascot’s royal turf, when sporting history will be made as the curtain comes down in dramatic fashion on the inaugural QIPCO British Champions Series.

HOOF IT

The QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup

With two demanding miles (3,200 metres) of Ascot’s famous turf to negotiate, the £200,000 QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup will provide a thorough test of stamina for flat racing’s top stayers as they contest the final major long distance race of the British season

The QIPCO British Champions Sprint Stakes

This six furlong (1,200 metres) contest provides the finale to the QIPCO British Champions Series Sprint category, with prize money of £250,000.

The QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes

The £250,000 climax to the QIPCO British Champions Series Fillies & Mares category over 1½ miles (2,400 metres) provides a fantastic end-of-season target for the top female stars of the turf.

FRANKEL

The Queen Elizabeth II Stakes Sponsored by QIPCO (British Champions Mile)

Long recognised as Europe’s mile championship, 1,600 metre races come no bigger than this anywhere on the international stage. With a cool million pounds in prize money, the race now enters a different stratosphere.

The QIPCO Champion Stakes (British Champions Middle Distance)

With £1.3 million in prize money, the QIPCO Champion Stakes will be the most valuable horse race ever run in Britain. Run over 1¼ miles (2,000 metres), this will be the final, pulsating showdown in the QIPCO British Champions Series Middle Distance category.

My Thoughts on Glorious Goodwood + FRANKEL

July 29, 2011 Leave a comment

Frankel wins the Sussex Stakes 2011 - pic: Toby Connors

To me this meeting was all about one race and one horse.  If you follow me on Twitter it’s pretty obvious I mean the Duel on the Downs, and Frankel.

Not from a betting perspective, although at odds of 11/10 last week it makes you think what a steal they were by the distance and the way he blew Canford Cliffs away!   I just wanted him to stay unbeaten, and in beating Canford Cliffs it made a lot of people who doubted the horse, his trainer and jockey realise that the speed machine Frankel is the real deal.

I was there at Royal Ascot on the opening day in June to witness the horse close up.  And was fortunate to have met the recently knighted Henry Cecil as he came through the VIP gate, and get a Racing Post supplement signed by the man himself.  He is a true gentleman.  He has time for people, does not think he is better than anyone else, and is very polite.

I wanted Frankel to win more than some horses I’ve had money on!  When horses like him come along it’s not something that’s gonna be replicated that often.  His mighty strike, his lightening speed and his unrivalled ability to pull away from other horses.  You could see how proud Sir Henry was.  Normally he keeps his emotions inside but you could see what that performance meant to him.  The man fortunate enough to ‘Pilot’ the equine rocket also showed his knockers where to go with a superb ride.

Goldikova is my favourite horse, but the Mighty F is very much up there with her.  In a sport that gets dragged through the mire, resulting in recent excessive negative publicity, surely it is in the racing communities interest to have such a high profile unbeaten horse?

Not since Sea The Stars has there been such a ‘hype horse’ that has race after race proved that he’s worthy of the attention and accolades.

Frankel - pic: Toby Connors

Quote: @ChalkBeater “SuperFrankel has now beaten horses who have won a combined total of 19 G1s, 10 G2s and 9 G3s. Not bad going really.”

As for the rest of Glorious Goodwood, I haven’t got to see much with working, and I don’t know why, but it just hasn’t grabbed my full attention this year. The opening days first race was won by 20/1 shot Arlequin, beating the heavily fancied (not by me) Modun.  Strong Suit won with ease, but was the only favourite to go in that day.
Harbour Watch looked impressive today.  Western Aristocrat was unimpressive (as expected) and Opinion Poll won the Goodwood Cup yesterday (I was on Overturn e/w at 16/1, who lead all the way, looked good, but then faded near to home).

Bit of a low point was Wild Coco.  I’d  had a bet on this myself and also used this selection as a charity bet (kindly provided by @Bet_Share) but she was never in it.

Big thank you to everyone who entered the Glorious Goodwood Tips Competition, and more so those who stuck with it through all 4 days.  Winning it with a 50% strike rate was @GaryJWood11 with 6 winners from 12 races.

Glorious Goodwood concludes tomorrow, with the big race being Nassau Stakes.

I’m now looking forward to Champion’s Day at Ascot in October, where hopefully Prince Khalid Abdullah’s prized asset can add another 1 to these 8: 11111111 … (I might also do a competition for that).

Royal Ascot 2011 Wednesday Tips.

Frederick Engels winning yesterday - pic: SkySports

Here’s my tips for today’s day two (WEDNESDAY) of Royal Ascot 2011.

2.30pm – CODEMASTER 3/1 (2nd)
Tipped this last time out when it won impressively at Newmarket, and should be first again today.
Plus Henry Candy’s only Royal Ascot 2011 entry!
(WESTERN ARISOCRAT I think will get a place so Each Way 6/1) (3rd)

3.05pm – MUSIC SHOW 8/1 (unplaced)
Only Group 1 winner in the line up.  Much more value than Sajjhaa, plus you can do it Each Way.  Also drawn high, which most winners were yesterday.
(LOLLY FOR DOLLY 12/1 is a horse I follow, but this is a step up in class, Risky Each Way) (WON)

3.45 – SO YOU THINK 2/5 (2nd)
Something drastically wrong if this doesn’t win.
TWICE OVER 14/1 risky Each Way and only 2nd place available, due to 7 runners. (nowhere)

4.25 – DANCE AND DANCE 11/1 (2nd)
28 runners in this race.  Dance & Dance just shades it for me.  BRICK RED 20/1 Each Way C&D performer. (unplaced)

5.00 – SHUMOOS 11/8 (2nd)
Won impressively on debut, beating Frederick Engels who won yesterday in style!

5.35 – WINTERS NIGHT 5/1 (3rd)
Two wins from two races here…
